Recommendations
**********************************************************************
Oracle recommends gathering dictionary statistics prior to
upgrading the database.
To gather dictionary statistics execute the following command
while connected as SYSDBA:

    EXECUTE dbms_stats.gather_dictionary_stats;

**********************************************************************
Oracle recommends reviewing any defined events prior to upgrading.

To view existing non-default events execute the following commands
while connected AS SYSDBA:
  Events:
    SELECT (translate(value,chr(13)||chr(10),' ')) FROM sys.v$parameter2
      WHERE  UPPER(name) ='EVENT' AND  isdefault='FALSE'

  Trace Events:
    SELECT (translate(value,chr(13)||chr(10),' ')) from sys.v$parameter2
      WHERE UPPER(name) = '_TRACE_EVENTS' AND isdefault='FALSE'

Changes will need to be made in the init.ora or spfile.

  1. hi,
    did you had to take any special step for DST patches?
    did you had any trouble deleting old oracle home as a post upgrade steps?
    thanks,
    Nikhil

  2. Hi Nikhil,

    1. On install the software in new oracle home, did you come up with this command or did it come from the upgrade instruction ? Is it where the new Oracle_Home location is decided ?

    2.how to check the history$registry ?

    Thanks,
    Paul

    • Hi Paul,

      1. 11.2.0.3 needs to be installed on new OH. its also included in the document, i think. it also safe installing on new OH to minimize downtime.
      because while installing and apply the latest patch, your DB still running and will be shutdown/restarted only during the actual upgrade.
      2.select * history$registry.

      thanks for visiting my site..

  3. In addition, could you explain why run root.sh, and why UNIX support was needed to run root.shl.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    • root.sh needs to be executed with root privilege. unless you have access to root then you don’t need the Unix guys.

  4. I noticed in the preinstall script it states “Components: [The following database components will be upgraded or installed”. I removed all of the components I was not using to reduce security risks. I also implemented many CIS (www.cisecurity.org) measures to tighten database security.

    Questions. Is there a way to not install unwanted components? Will the upgrade reset all of the CIS security measures I have implemented (think I know the answer).

    • Hi Rob,

      i think it will not reset whatever you remove… havent implemented CIS either.
      but for me, the patch/upgrade will just patch/upgrade whatever is installed.

      thanks for visiting.

  5. Can you pls confirm me two things:
    a) Why we have used the catbundle.sql- Is it specific that we used dbca?
    b) And when we have to shutdown the database before applying PSU?

    • thanks for visiting.
      a. its part of the post installation when you apply any patch.
      b. when apply psu all instance running on that oracle home should be stop
      – shutdown all instance including listener
      – apply psu (opatch apply)
      – start listener and database
      – in each database running on that oracle home execute catbundle.sql psu apply
